The Kiwanis Clean Up Challenge was held on Saturday, May 14, from 9-12. Susann Venters served as project coordinator. The city of Huntington donated use of a dumpster that was located at Imperial Bedding. The DNR donated trash bags and the use of safety vests and litter "picker uppers". Water was donated by Foodfair at First Street for the volunteers. We met at the 8th St side of the Court House by 9:00 where community members joined us. We worked for three hours to pick up trash and remove graffiti around downtown Huntington. Special Thanks to Kiwanians Susann Venters, Steve Christo, Sam Stanley, Scott Anderson, Dick King, Bob Mauk and Sandy Mauk as well as Key Clubber Amanda Adkins who participated. Special Thanks also to the Herald-Dispatch for the tremendous support and coverage of the event. The publicity alone made this a worthwhile service project.

Applebees Pancake Breakfast

Huntington Kiwanians celebrated a successful Pancake Breakfast that was held at Applebees downtown on April 30. The Circle K and Key Club members were a great help. Over 150 breakfasts were served. We plan to use the money raised to purchase 200 books required by the Day Care Center. Net proceeds will be over $1,500.

Applebees furnished all supplies and food except for paper goods as well as staff for the kitchen. We can thank them by patronizing their business.

Mayor Felinton Speaks to Kiwanis

At the March 29, 2005 meeting, Mayor David Felinton was our guest speaker. He is originally from the Baltimore area and has been in Huntington for 10 years where he graduated from Marshall University. This is budget time in Huntington and the Mayor said that he is looking at a possible 2.5 million dollar gap, mostly due to medical insurance costs going up. There will be no new city fees this year but they plan to raise the money by aggressively pursuing collection of delinquent Municipal Service Fees and Refuse Fees. Currently there are 7 million dollars in fees outstanding. A new person will be hired to walk door to door checking on licensing and B&O taxes paid. Additionally, an outside law firm will be brought in to audit B&O tax filings. The city will also be working with the county assessor's office to update property assessments. The city has been losing population and therefore tax base. New sources of revenue will need to be found. The Mayor supports the possibility of joining with Cabell County to provide joint services where natural growth leads them. He was positive about Huntington.

Initial Plans Set for the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Kiwanis Day Care Center

The Kiwanis Day Care Center, established in 1930 in Huntington, is the oldest day care center in West Virginia and the oldest continuous community service project of Kiwanis International. This Fall, we will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the center so mark your calendars now.

Festivities will begin on Thursday, Sept. 1st at the 'Kiwanis Night' tailgate at the Marshall University season opening football game. Then on Friday, Sept. 2nd, an open house will be held at the Day Care Center. An anniversary reception and dinner will follow.

Details and times for all activities will be available soon. Proceeds from these special events will be used to initiate a fund drive to build a gymnasium for the Kiwanis Day Care Center.

9th Annual Spaghetti Dinner a Success

The 9th Annual Spaghetti Dinner was held March 25th this year at the Fellowship Hall, rear of First United Methodist Church. Preliminary counts show that we served over 300 take out orders and fed at least as many in the hall. A steady stream of customers was served efficiently from steam tables that kept it fresh at all times. We added a marinara sauce this year along with a wonderful meat sauce and meat balls. A beautiful salad bar allowed our guests to fix a salad just as they liked it. A variety of cakes were available to top off the meal. Many complements were heard as guests departed.

Special thanks go out to Jane and Jerry Morris for running the kitchen, preparing the sauce, and for their invaluable contributions in time and effort, to Dick King for managing supplies and the Hall (beautiful and comfortable) even though he was very sick, and to the many Kiwanians who helped in preparation, waiting tables, cleaning up and all the other chores needed to make the dinner a success. Thanks also go out to the Circle K Club at Marshall University and the Key Club at St. Joseph for their volunteers.

SE Lawrence Co. Club to join in Kiwanis Gala

The Southeast Lawrence County Kiwanis Club of Ohio will be joining us for the Kiwanis Gala/Awards and Installation Dinner and Social. The dinner will be held September 24, 2004, at 6:30pm at the YWCA Ballroom, 633 Fifth Ave., Huntington.

This will be a great opportunity for fellowship with our local Kiwanians. Enthusiasm is "catching" and should set each of our clubs off on the track for a tremendously successful year.

Advise Bob Mauk at 736-7530 by September 16th of your plans to attend and an estimate from each club, for meal planning purposes. If anyone needs transportation, let a club member know so you can be picked up.

Kiwanis Gala/Awards and Officer Installation Dinner and Social Planned

KDCC Receives Grant from Selby Wellman Foundation

The KDCC was recently presented with a check for $2,500 from the Selby Wellman Foundation for the acquisition of LeapFrog products for the Day Care Center.

Thanks to the efforts of Sam Stanley, the children will be on the way to developing a love of reading as they work independently with the LeapFrog Learning System.

When learning is fun, surprising and exciting, you do more than simply nourish growing minds, you inspire a lifelong love of learning.

Highlights of the 85th Annual District Convention

  • The 85th Annual West Virginia District Kiwanis Convention was held August 13-15, 2004 at Canaan Valley State Park Lodge.
  • The Huntington Club was represented by Delegates Lieutenant-Governor Division 10 Tom Pafford, President-Elect Bob Mauk, and Sandy Mauk.
  • There were 68 delegates voting on District business, representing 33 clubs.
  • The West Virginia District was again recognized from the podium at the International Convention for its positive growth and strategic plan implementation, the only district in North America so recognized.
  • Governor-Elect Bill Ott of North Parkersburg Club was elected and confirmed as Governor-Designate of the District for 2004-2005, assuming office effective October 1st, 2004.
  • For the first time in several years, there were multiple nominees for Governor-Elect 2005-2006. The nominees were Greg Shepherd of Wheeling, Robert Hammer of Fairmont, and Ernest Fortuna of Morgantown.
  • The delegates elected Ernie Fortuna as Governor-Elect with an absolute majority on the first ballot.
  • The recent dues increase has led to a solvent District.
  • The candidacy of District Secretary Bernie Knott for International Trustee at the International Convention in July 2005 in Hawaii was promoted. Support was urged from all clubs. This will be a particularly good year to run a campaign since there are no very large districts with trustee candidates for this convention.
  • Everyone is encouraged to attend the Hawaiian Convention, so start making plans now. There are efforts to make group travel packages available that will be economical. Governor Mickey Johnson outlined three benefits: 1) Support Bernie Knotts candidacy, 2) Support our District, 3) FUN.
  • The important role of Key Clubs was stressed, for future health and growth of Kiwanis. Key Clubs now have twice as many members as Kiwanis.
  • Dr. Gunter Gasser of Austria attended the Convention as our International Trustee Advisor.
  • Mr. Andy Carey, Kiwanis International Director, gave an excellent speech at the closing banquet, focusing on membership growth and development. He was again complimentary of our District, and offered the full resources of the International Headquarters for support.
  • Mr. Carey repeated the call of Kiwanis International President-Designate Case Van Kleef to all Kiwanians to return to our core values next year through The IDEA for 2004-2005:
I - Increase our commitment to young children.
-- By fulfilling our involvement in Young Children Priority One, and get all of our 8600 clubs to continue or start a new project.
-- Continue our promise to IDD around the world, so that all children are protected.
D - Develop leadership throughout the Kiwanis Family.
-- Strengthen adult leadership for service and growth at the club, division and district levels of Kiwanis International.
-- Enhance youth leadership, they are the future of the world.
E - Expand Kiwanis service around the world.
-- By growth of membership in existing clubs through retention and adding new members.
-- By building new Kiwanis clubs to serve more communities and nations.
-- By extending the ideals of service to a new generation through Circle K, Key Clubs, Kiwanis Junior, Builders, K Kids, and Action Clubs.
A - Access Kiwanis service and growth through the World Link Program.
-- By supporting this program in which a club or division can sponsor a new Kiwanis club in a country where Kiwanis is really needed. With your donation ($350) you can become the creator of a new club and with your counsel, guidance, and help you can make them strong Kiwanians to serve their community and country.
At the International Convention, Case Van Kleef stated: These items are truly not any different than you have heard before. I have put them in this order which I hope will make it easier for you to remember. But to truly accomplish the 2004-2005 IDEA, your commitment and willingness to accept change is vital. Change does not necessarily assure progress, but progress requires change. Education is essential to change, we must get to the grass roots level and educate every member and new members, and create pride in membership.
  • Mr. Carey announced that next year Kiwanis International is rolling out the "K University". Its mission is to educate Kiwanians and provide programs that develop competent, knowledgeable, and ethical youth and adult leaders. Besides the "K University", we will start educational video conferences with districts, divisions, and ultimately with clubs. It is essential that Kiwanis International become part of the 21st century with aggressive new initiatives to promote and strengthen our fine organization. We all know the Kiwanian we want to touch and educate, but we know they are not here, they do not attend division councils or district conventions, so we must go to them. The "K University" will be like a traveling road show, teaching and educating wherever required, and with the addition of video conferencing we will enhance the overall training for years to come.
  • Governor-Designate Bill Ott outlined his Share the K plan for the coming year:
    • Build three new clubs during the year.
    • Build five new K-Kids Clubs.
    • Build four new Builders Clubs.
    • Build four new Key Clubs. Build one new Circle K Club.
    • Target a donation of $1/month/member for the IDD Project, for an estimated annual total of $15,000.
    • Challenge each club to add one new Young Children Priority One Project during the year.
    • Challenge each club to donate to the Childrens Miracle Network Project in October 2004.
    • Emphasize club retention and building membership during the year.
KDCC Repairs and Upgrades Completed
The annual spring clean-up and improvement project was held at the Kiwanis Day Care Center on April 10. Members from the Huntington Kiwanis, Marshall Circle-K and St. Joseph Key Club gathered together for service and fellowship. The grounds were cleaned up from the winter and much new mulch was spread.

In June, two major projects were completed. Thanks to a grant from the City of Huntington, the roof of the Day Care Center was replaced. Additionally, the Huntington Kiwanis Club purchased a 10' X 12' barn style storage shed built and installed by the Ohio Amish to replace the old rusted shed.

Repairs were also made to the furnace and electric system. Current talks are underway about moving the flagpole and replacing the Day Care Center sign. Both will be lighted.

Spring Hanging Basket & Flower Sale a Success
On Fri. May 7, after a frustrating delay, a truck load of beautiful flowers was delivered to the YWCA. The colors and smells helped us forget our earlier frustration.

Bright and early Saturday morning we were back and ready to deliver the flowers as early Mother's Day presents. Many customers admitted as they picked up their flowers that they wish they had purchased more.

Bob Mauk, Chairman, reported that 138 flowers were sold and the Kiwanis Family of Clubs raised approximately $1,000 for our service projects.

8th Annual Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner A Tasty Success

The 8th Annual Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner was held on a very rainy April 23, 2004, at First United Methodist Church. Bob Mauk, Chairman of the event, reported over 480 meals were served and profits should top $3,500.

A steady stream of customers was served very efficiently due to changes implemented this year. Food was served from steam tables that kept it fresh at all times. A beautiful salad bar allowed guests to fix a salad just as they liked it. A variety of delicious desserts were available to top off the meal. Many complements were heard as guests departed.

Special thanks go out to David Erenrich for the use of the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall and kitchen, Jane and Jerry Morris for their invaluable contributions in time and effort and to the many Kiwanians who helped in preparation, waiting tables, cleaning up and all the other chores needed to make the dinner a success. Special thanks also go out to the Circle K Club at Marshall University and the Key Club at St. Joseph for their volunteers.

It appears Paul Davis was once again the leader in selling tickets to the dinner, while Kyle Cook, C.O. Hughes, and David Erenrich were high on the list.

Club delegates selected for the 2004 International Kiwanis Convention

Current President David Erenrich and WV Division 10 Lt. Governor Tom Pafford will be the Huntington Kiwanis Club's official delegates at the 89th Annual Kiwanis International Convention in St. Louis, MO, June 26-29.

Highlighting the convention for the second year, an international Conference on Children will bring together a gathering of Kiwanis-family members, child advocates, and representatives from non-governmental organizations.

Local fan favorite, Wynonna Judd, will take center stage on Sunday night in the Super Star Show. She will perform in place of Willie Nelson who had to cancel due to scheduled carpal tunnel surgery.

MU Circle K Honored With "Gold Status"

  • The Huntington Club, mostly through the efforts of Sandy Mauk, had an attractive poster for the Friday evening Poster Party. • The Huntington Club was awarded a banner patch for the Young Children Priority One category, recognizing our continued sponsorship of Huntington Kiwanis Day Care Center. We were one of ten clubs receiving this award. Tom Pafford should be recognized for doing the necessary work to qualify us for the award.
  • The District hopes to have over 80 attendees at the 2004 International Convention in St. Louis on June 26-29th. There is an April 15th deadline to receive discounts on registration fees. New Look for Kiwanis-Family Web Sites
Kiwanis International recently unveiled redesigned Kiwanis-family Web sites. The new sites are easily navigated, highly interactive, and brimming with useful resources and content.

A "Member" section provides resources for members, clubs, and districts: forms and Kiwanis related literature; marketing and public relations materials; and Kiwanis-family links. Portions of this section are protected for Kiwanis-family use only. A one-time registration process, requiring member ID and club key numbers, gives Kiwanians easy access to these features.

The web sites are available through the "Kiwanis International" link to the left or by clicking here web sites.

  • Father Chuck McCallister announced that the WV District will be nominating and running Bernie Knott for International Trustee, for the year 2005-2006, the convention in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 1-5, 2005! • Governor-Designate Mickey Johnson pleaded with all to continue the drive to support current President Richardson's goal of 5 new clubs, and we have 3 formed, 2 to go.
  • Governor-Designate Johnson's theme will be 1000 Hands, alluding to the fact that we need more hands to truly be recognized as the premiere service club, serving the children of the world. To that end, he has set a goal of 500 new members for the District. (Current membership is 1400.)
  • Our own Tom Light received Governor-Designate Johnson's new pin, one of only 4 awarded at the convention. The only way you can get a new pin is to bring in a new member.

New Member Recruitment Incentive Program
Because of the increase in dues at the International, District, and Local levels, the Kiwanis dues for next year will be $120, payable semi-annually at $60. The Huntington Kiwanis Board on August 12,2003 voted to assist their membership by creating a new member recruitment incentive program. This program will credit any member in good standing, who successfully recruits and sponsors a new member who is inducted and paid up, with a $10 offset on the sponsoring members next 6 months dues installment. Therefore, any member who could recruit 3 new members in a year, would be paying the same dues as prior to the dues increases.

Report on the Kiwanis International Convention For Huntington Clubs

A report on the International Convention was presented to the Huntington club on July 29, 2003 by Tom Pafford and Bob Mauk who had attended the convention as delegates. Opening Remarks were presented by Tom who then reviewed the Liability Forum and the Lt. Governor Forum.

The discussion then turned to the two amendments passed at the convention which authorized an increase in International dues and provided for an equitable implementation. Copies of the amendments were distributed for review and the videoed remarks of Executive Director Eyjolfur Sigurdsson were shown.

The members then viewed a video of newly elected Intl Secretary Steven Siemans highly motivational speech. He will be Intl President in 2 years.

The video of the Closing Session report on IDD was watched with pride. Kiwanis has been able to raise the number of persons with access to iodized salt from 1 billion to 4 billion since the project began.

Closing remarks by Bob Mauk addressed the Membership Retention and Growth forums. He repeated the message that the secret to membership retention is hands-on service projects. He emphasized the value and strength to be found in working as a team.

A similar presentation of video tapes and discussion was held for the East Huntington Kiwanis Club on August 7, 2003.

Special Thanks to Sandy Mauk

The club owes a special thanks to Sandy Mauk, wife of vice president Bob Mauk, for the outstanding club brochure she designed, edited, and printed. It's a great tool for us to use in recruiting new members.

Now, let's use it.

7th Annual Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner will be most profitable yet for club

Final numbers aren't in yet, but the Huntington Kiwanis club's 7th Annual Spaghetti Dinner held on April 11 is expected to be the most profitable yet, by as much as several thousand dollars.

Bob Mauk, Ticket Sales Coordinator of the event, said that income from the dinner will be well over $5,000 when all the money comes trickling in, while costs involved will be less than $1,000. Last year, the club netted a little over $2,500 on the dinner.

Special thanks go out to Mauk, head chef Tom Light, Peter and Bernice Doty and their staff at Four Seasons for their contributions in time and effort and to the many Kiwanians who helped in preparation, waiting tables, cleaning up and all the other chores needed to make the dinner a success. Special thanks also go out to the Circle K Club at Marshall University and the Key Club at St. Joseph for their volunteers.

It appears Paul Davis was the leader in selling the most tickets to the dinner, while Kyle Cook, C.O. Hughes, and David Erenrich were high on the list. We had over 35 corporate sponsors who each purchased $100 packets of tickets.

KDCC gets help from city.

We know they get some static, bur our thanks, are sincere to the Huntington City Council for providing a $24,000 grant to the Kiwanis Day Care Center for roof repairs. We also need to thank KDCC director Patti Nelson for pulling the right strings in getting this grant approved.

KDCC playground spruced up by volunteers.

Kyle Cook, chairman of our KDCC committee, said that the April 5th work party to spruce up the grounds at the center involved 10 Kiwanians and 13 Circle K members. Assisting from the club were Dick King, Jim McVey, Bob Mauk, Lander Beal, Phyllis Stapleton, Patti Nelson, Wayne and Claire Horton, Steve Christo, Emily Casto, and Cook. The Hortons and Cook provided refreshments and pizza was served by the KDCC.

Two large truck loads of mulch were spread on the playground, the grounds were cleaned, some grass seed sewn, trees trimmed and the play house was repaired.

Happy Birthday Phyllis!

Tom Light, Lander Beal, C.O. Hughes, Patti Nelson, and Sam Stanley were on hand on April 23 at the KDCC to help Phyllis Stapleton celebrate her 70th birthday. Thanks Phyllis for all you've done for Kiwanis and for the KDCC.
