Electronic Databases

Did you know that the Cabell County Public Library provides access to thousands of magazines, poems, newspaper articles and other information sources through its online databases?

And in some cases, you don't even have to come to the library to have access. If you have a home computer and a library card, you can log on using your card number or passwords provided by the library.

For questions or to obtain the passwords, please contact the reference department at 304/528-5700. Remember, you must have a library card in order to obtain the database passwords.

	Scholastic BookFlix is an online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction eBooks to build a love of reading and learning. This engaging resource for children in grades PreK-3 will help early readers develop and practice essential reading skills and introduces students to a world of knowledge and exploration. Children can access BookFlix anywhere there is an Internet connection. It’s like having access to the library’scollection24 hours a day, seven days a week! For easy instructions for using BookFlix from home, please contact Main Library at 304-528 5711 ext. 141 or any branch library.

	Mango Languages Mango is an online language-learning system that teaches actual conversation skills for 12 different languages. Mango uses real-life situations and actual conversations to more effectively teach a new language. By listening to and repeating after material designed from native conversations, you'll not only learn the individual words and phrases, you'll know how they're used in practical situations and conversations. You'll learn more than grammar, vocabulary and conjugation, you'll learn how to communicate.

	Ebsco Host This source allows access to thousands of periodicals, journals, newspapers and other information sources, including pictures and images. Information modules include general information, business sources, and health sources. There is a module designed for children called Searchasaurus. NoveList is also available, but it is only accessible at the downtown library. EbscoHost is provided statewide through the West Virginia Library Commission.

	Thomson-Gale Thomson Gale™ (www.gale.com), a business of The Thomson Corporation, is a world leader in e-research and educational publishing for libraries, schools and businesses. Best known for its accurate and authoritative reference content as well as its intelligent organization of full-text magazine and newspaper articles, the company offers us access to 10 health-related resources.

	Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia ™ is a quick reference rich with multimedia and news for researchers plus activities for teachers and librarians to use with students. You can search by word or browse by subject – search results include multimedia and links to prescreened, constantly monitored Web sites.Grolier Online is provided statewide through the West Virginia Library Commission.

	Heritage Quest Online provides a unique, growing collection of research materials for tracing family history and American culture. Beginning or professional genealogists can now use this powerful online library, with original page images for all documents, from the convenience of their home or at the library. Indexes and original page images mean no additional trips, inter-library loan requests or work by researchers or staff..

	Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970, provides access to more than 660,000 large-scale maps of more than 12,000 American towns and cities. In electronic form, Sanborn Maps take on much improved value over the microfilm versions of the same maps, allowing for greater flexibility of use and improved viewing possibilities. Users have the ability to easily manipulate the maps, magnify and zoom in on specific sections, and layer maps from different years.

	Learning Express Library is a collection of practice tests for everything from grade school proficiency exams to civil service, military and college entrance exams. Citizenship, cosmetology and law enforcement exams also are available. Overall, nearly 100 tests! Practice online and get immediate feedback about your performance. Learning Express is provided statewide through the West Virginia Library Commission. NOTE: If you are a first-time user, you need to register an account by going to wvinfodepot.org and a link to Info Depot. Once there, you then click the Learning Express link there. That will allow you to register. If you already have a Learning Express account, you can use the in-house or remote access links at left.

	big chalk eLibrary This collection of information includes hundreds of newspapers (including The Charleston Gazette), magazine, books, and reference sources. It is unique in that it also includes pictures, maps and radio & TV transcripts, such as NPR Weekend Edition. Great for research and school projects.

	Reference USA includes business, residential and medical contact information. Locate a phone number or compare data about a certain type of business. Useful for locating a doctor or dentist. Specialized information includes a listing of "nearby" names and addresses for home or business. Contact information for businesses is also provided. The information covers not only Huntington and West Virginia, but also the entire country.

	Newsbank offers complete full-text content of local and regional news from the Herald Dispatch, including obituaries. Paid advertisements are excluded. This includes articles from 1999 to the present time. In addition Newsbank offers stories from the Logan Banner from December 2006 to the present. Newsbank also offers special news reports with full-text articles from major newspapers about "hot topics" such as elections, terrorism, the environment, and the war in Iraq.

	Access NewspaperARCHIVE gives public libraries and K-12 schools around the world access to NewspaperARCHIVE.com's historical newspaper database. With this service, students and library patrons can browse tens of millions of newspaper pages in our archive through your institution. Access NewspaperARCHIVE will allow users to view, save and print full-page newspapers dating from 1759 to 1977. Log on with your library card card, they will be connected to our database.

	Facts on File. Current articles and news related to Issues and Controversies are up-to date and objective and examine both sides of issues. Additional information can include statistics, pictures, charts, and maps. User name: cabellco, password: facts.

	Foundation Directory Online is available at the CabellCounty Public Library in downtown Huntington only. Staff must assist patrons with logging onto this database. Foundation Directory Online is updated continually, providing the most accurate details available on U.S. foundations and their grants (Foundation Directory Online uses the following link…CCPL only, staff provides log in: http://fconline.fdncenter.org )

	Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers, theinaugural database from Rosen Publishing Online, provides students with comprehensive curricular support and self-help tools on topics including diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, fitness, mental health, diversity, family life, and more.
