The Jewish Literature Series -- discussing books on the theme "Demons, Golems, and Dybbuks: Monsters of the Jewish Imagination" -- continues this Sunday at the main library.
The series is sponsored by Nextbook and the American Library Association. It is led by Dr. Matthew C. Wolfe and Rabbi David E. Wucher and is held once a month on Sunday afternoons at the Main Library.
This Sunday at 2pm, the play "The Dybbuk" by S. Ansky will be discussed. The finest play written during the Yiddish Renaissance, The Dybbuk tells the story of Leah, who, on the eve of her wedding, is possessed by the spirit of the dead, a poor rabbinical student who had been in love with her. First performed in Vilna in l920, weeks after Ansky died, the Dybbuk quickly became a conrnerstone of Jewish literature.
The dates and books in the series are:
Sunday, March 2, 2008, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Sunday, April 6, 2008, The Puttermesser Papers by Cynthia Ozick
Sunday May 18, 2008, Angels in America by Tony Kushner
