Join us for a Friends of the Library Celebration this Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. on the third floor of the CCPL. We encourage you to bring your questions about this group and books to donate to their sales (held the first Thursday through Saturday weekend in February, June, and October).
Over the course of the last 50-plus years, the members of the Friends of the Library have donated untold thousands of dollars and nobody knows how many volunteer service hours to Cabell County Public Library. Friends’ assistance seems almost endless, but includes sponsorship of our new plastic library cards with key rings, underwriting a major portion of our special summer programs for children and adults, and the comfortable chairs in our newly dedicated Salt Rock branch library building.
October 18-24 is National Friends of the Library Week. It’s a good time to publicly thank the local Friends group members for all they’ve done over the years. Climaxing the week, there will be a Friend’s of the Library Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Main Library. A number of fun activities are planned for the whole family—including local author booths, story time and crafts for children, and light refreshments. Also come early or stay late to take part in the many other activities at the Library including the digital bookmobile parked on Ninth Street between 5th and 6th Avenues; blue grass bands, the Huntington Paranormal Research Group, Eastern Kentucky Storytellers Guild, costumed characters and much more. Don’t miss it!
Since tax revenues can no longer meet all costs for CCPL, the local public library depends more and more upon generous donors who believe that the library is essential to the quality of life in our community. Please join FRIENDs, this non-profit organization aids the development of local public library through advocacy which focuses attention on its needs, volunteering, increasing library facilities, and by financially supporting special events and projects.
Friends’ activities are funded through their used book sales, membership dues and generous donations. The Friends always welcome new members and hope to reach 400 members for this 2010 year. As a Friend, you will receive: Library Connection, the library system’s newsletter, quarterly; a 10% discount at Empire books for showing your membership card; and the sense of fulfillment that comes from supporting an important and vital community institution.
