We want to make our first Friends of the Library Day a huge success. So we've invited the world's only Digital Bookmobile to visit the Library Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
How big is the Bookmobile, you ask? It's housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer that's seventy-four feet long and weighs 80,000 pounds. It's so big that we're going to block off 9th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues all day Saturday for this event.
This monster truck is a high-tech vehicle equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore Cabell County Public Library's download service. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the Cabell County Public Library's digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and sample eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video. The Digital Bookmobile is so huge it's got its own website: http://www.digitalbookmobile.com.
Before or after their tour of the Bookmobile, patrons can walk across the street and apply for a library card so that they can start downloading immediately from the Library's growing collection of bests-selling, new release, and classic titles. But before taking that short walk, guests are invited to listen to three bluegrass bands playing on the block. There will be costumed characters, clowns, face painting, and lots of other entertainment for kids to enjoy. The Huntington Fire Department will have one of its shiniest firetrucks there for kids to inspect. Hotdogs will be available for purchase. Visitors can also enter a raffle to win an MP-3 device.
And while patrons are in the Main Library they can enjoy a full day of events. The Eastern Kentucky Storyteller Guild is sending its most skilled storytellers to entertain guests with old-time tales starting at 1:30 p.m. There will be storytelling for children from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. And just in time for Halloween, the Huntington Paranormal Research Group will be sharing ghosthunting techniques and experiences from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The Friends will be there in their splendor, serving punch and cookies, eager to explain to any patron why they love being Friends of the Library and all the benefits that come with being a Friend.
