The aim of this summer’s Adult Summer Reading Program is to raise money for the reconstruction of the earthquake ravaged libraries of Haiti. We’re also trying to raise awareness of the uniqueness of this Caribbean island nation. You probably know that decades of violence and political instability have made Haiti the poorest country in the Americas. But did you know that it is the only nation in the world whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion? Did you know that U.S. troops occupied Haiti between 1915 and 1934?
On July 26 at the main library, you can learn lots more interesting things about Haiti when Lynn Cartwright, pastor of Milton United Methodist Church, shares her knowledge of this fascinating island in a multimedia presentation. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Ms. Cartwright has been traveling to Haiti for the past ten years, working with children at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys in Port-au-Prince, Wings of Hope in Fermathe, and Trinity House in Jacmel. Prior to becoming an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church Lynn taught n the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at WVU for many years.
This is sure to be an interesting program. For information about this program, which is free and open to all, please call the Milton Branch Library at 304-743-6711, the Barboursville Branch Library at 304-736-4621, or the Main Library at 304-528-5700.
