Seventy-five years ago five young men from tiny Waterloo, in Lawrence County, Ohio, to win back-to-back state high school championships.
The Waterloo Wonders astonished overflow crowds in the state’s largest arenas with their whirlwind passing, deadeye shooting, lockdown defense and whimsical showmanship. Back in the formative period of basketball the Wonders were true innovators: left-handed, right-handed, two-handed, behind the back, between the legs, over-handed, underhanded, bowling style, sitting down, lying down, without looking – the Wonders passed with such lightning speed, such radar accuracy that fans and opponents alike often did not know where the ball was.
Author Dick Burdette, whose book, The Fabulous Waterloo Wonders, was published in 1961, has written a revised and expanded account of their story.
On Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Burdette will visit the Cabell County Public Library to recount the fabulous story of the Waterloo Wonders in a program that will fascinate young and old. He will be available to sign copies of his book.
