Set sail for the Main Library and its branches and join the free summer reading program, “Make a Splash - READ!” Children will explore the world of water and water fun through stories, songs, games and other activities about oceans, rivers, lakes, and pools and the unusual creatures that live there. This summer’s program will include programs from water science to water music.
Children will have the opportunity to learn about our water treasure the Ohio River by taking a guided boat trip on the Ohio River in a sternwheeler; see and touch live turtles at the library; and learn how to take care of our precious water resources. What program offers children a wonderful variety of books, chance to meet new friends, and have fun competing in a tournament? Battle of the Books, of course. Each student team that participates in the Battle of the Books is responsible for reading 10 pre-selected books . Once a week, teams of students will have fun competing against each other to see who can answer questions about the books. Students are asked a variety of questions regarding the contents of the book, for example: identifying a particular quote, a character’s job or a specific plot. The team has to identify the name of the book and the author. At the end of the summer, students will compete in a grand tournament that will include teams from all of the Libraries. The grand tournament for all participating teams will be held at the Main Library on Monday, August 2 for grades 3-5 and on Tuesday, August 3 for grades 6-8. Below is the Battle of the Books list for grades 3,4 and 5 and 6,7,and 8 for summer 2010.
