ELECTRONIC DATABASES


Did you know that the Cabell County Public Library provides access to thousands of magazines, poems, newspaper articles and other information sources through its online databases?

And in some cases, you don't even have to come to the library to have access. If you have a home computer and a library card, you can log on using your card number or passwords provided by the library.

For questions or to obtain the passwords, please contact the reference department at 304/528-5700. Remember, you must have a library card in order to obtain the database passwords.

Ebsco Host
This source allows access to thousands of periodicals, journals, newspapers and other information sources, including pictures and images. Information modules include general information, business sources, and health sources. There is also a module designed for children called Searchasaurus. EbscoHost is provided statewide through the West Virginia Library Commission.

Thomson-Gale has two modules. Ancestry Plus, which is suitable for genealogical research, and The Herald-Dispatch, which covers from 1999 to the present. Note that only The Herald Dispatch can be accessed remotely. In other words, Ancestry Plus, the other Thomson-Gale module, can only be used in
libraries.

Learning Express Library is a collection of practice tests for everything from grade school proficiency exams to civil service, military and college entrance exams. Citizenship, cosmetology and law enforcement exams also are available. Overall, nearly 100 tests! Practice online and get immediate feedback about your performance. Learning Express is provided statewide through the West Virginia Library Commission.

big chalk eLibrary
This collection of information includes hundreds of newspapers (including The Charleston Gazette), magazine, books, and reference sources. It is unique in that it also includes pictures, maps and radio & TV transcripts, such as NPR Weekend Edition. Great for research and school projects.
Not Available Outside Library

Reference USA
includes business, residential and medical contact information. Locate a phone number or compare data about a certain type of business. Useful for locating a doctor or dentist. Specialized information includes a listing of "nearby" names and addresses for home or business. Contact information for businesses is also provided. The information covers not only Huntington and West Virginia, but also the entire country.

 

LitFinder
offers access to thousands of poems, short stories and essays. Biographical information on authors is available and in some cases, analysis of works in provided. Search by first or last line of a poem, author or genre. Great for all ages and all interests. Not just for students!

Not Available Outside Library

All Data Pro is a database which provides auto repair instructions and illustrations for hundreds of vehicles.
